Surrealist painter, poet, editor and photographer Jindrich Styrsky is an inspiring figure of the Czech avant-garde in the late 20s. Styrsky joined Devetsil, an association of the Czech avant-garde in Prague, and became director of its drama wing called the Liberal Theatre. Influenced by Max Ernst’s collage-novels and André Masson’s illustrations for Aragon’s and Bataille’s erotic writings, Styrsky edited the erotic revue Erotická and a compilation of erotic literature and illustration called Edition 69. The two periodicals rank among the most important surrealist publications of the time, exposing the taboos of bourgeois culture during the interwar Czech avant-garde.
